Carpets are a great flooring option in commercial space because they are comfortable, inviting, and beautiful. While they tend to be pretty easy to maintain, they do require cleaning. After all, they get walked on every day by dozens of people who have been walking those same shoes through who knows what. The dust, germs, and pathogens that build up can become a big health problem if you don’t clean them regularly.
Dirty carpets are often home to dust mites that live in them and feed off the bacteria there. Once they die, their bodies linger and can cause nose irritation. The presence of mold in dirty carpets can also lead to respiratory issues including flu-like symptoms. Over time, it can also cause asthma or make it worse. If you, your employees, or customers have asthma, dirty carpets could trigger dangerous asthma attacks.
Regular exposure to dust and bacteria trapped in dirty carpets can be a problem for your skin as well. The dust mites and their debris mentioned above can also cause irritation to eyes and skin. Obviously, if you have open wounds or scratches, the dirt from the carpets could also lead to infection if you sit or walk barefoot on them. However, that dirt can also just act as an irritant or even cause an allergic reaction, if you’re susceptible.
Weakened Immune System
The constant onslaught of bacteria and toxins from a dirty carpet can send immune systems into overdrive. Living with a revved-up immune system for too long can lead to a host of health problems and make you susceptible to other illnesses. Dirty carpets also contain mycotoxins which can sometimes cause stomach issues to develop.
How To Clean Your Carpets
You should make sure that you have a solid cleaning schedule for the carpets in your commercial business to prevent them from getting too dirty. Vacuuming your carpets on a regular basis, at least weekly but possibly even daily in high-traffic areas, can help lessen these issues. In addition to that, you should plan to thoroughly clean your carpets or to bring in a professional crew to do it, at least once or twice a year.
